The Department of Roman languages was established within the Faculty of Philology  in 1995. It is the first department in the history of Vilnius University where four roman languages (French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese) are taught as a second foreign language, and French as the first (speciality) language. After the reorganization of the Faculty of Philology in 1999, the Department of Roman Languages shifted to the newly established Institute of Foreign Languages. Since 2006 the Russian language is also being taught as the first (speciality) and as the second foreign language.

The main goals of the department

  • to organize, implement and coordinate the teaching process of the French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese languages to the students of Vilnius University in line with the procedures laid down in study programs
  •  to further develop the programmes of the taught subjects, to carry out research and methodological work, to promote the sharing of teaching experience and cooperation with teachers in this country and abroad.

Methodological work

  • to teach French and Russian Languages as as a compulsory subject to full time students of Vilnius University
  • to teach French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese and Russian languages as elective or optional subjects
  • to implement full time BA and MA study programmes run by the Institute of Foreign Language (IFL).

Research and methodological work

  •  Synchronic research into the structure (grammatical, lexical, semantic and stylistic features) of the Roman and Slavic languages
  • Applied linguistics and linguistic didactics: lexicographic practice, French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese language teaching methodology, preparation of standardized tests, didactics of the foreign languages.

Other activities

The teachers of the Department actively participate in designing and implementing professional development programmes, translate scientific literature and fiction from Roman and Slavic languages, hold seminars and conferences, give talks and presentations in international conferences, regularly upgrade their qualification by attending various courses and seminars, go on study and teaching visits abroad.     

International cooperation / membership in professional bodies

The Department has contacts with foreign language departments and language centers of national and foreign higher education institutions. Staff of the Department actively cooperates with the Cultural French Center of O. Milašius, Italian Culture Centre, the Institute of  Cervantes, Public Service Language Centre, maintains close contacts with the colleagues from the New Sorbona University in Paris, Madrid Complutense University, as well as Piza and St. Petersburg Universities.
