Our goals:

  • to offer a wide range of German language courses to Vilnius university students in compliance with the requirements specified in the respective university study programmes;
  • to further develop the programmes of the subjects taught;
  • to carry out research and methodological work;
  • to promote sharing of teaching experience and cooperation with language teachers in Lithuania and abroad.

We teach:

  • German for Specific Purposes as a compulsory subject to full time students of Vilnius University;
  • General or Professional German as an elective or optional subject;
  • it full time BA degree programmes run by the Institute of Foreign Language (IFL).

 Research and methodological work

  • Synchronic research into the structure (grammatical, lexical, semantic and stylistic features) of the Germanic and Lithuanian languages, integrating the research results into  the teaching process and lexicographic practice
  • Applied linguistics and linguistic didactics: lexicographic practice, foreign language teaching methodology, preparation of standardized tests)
  • Research into contemporary German literature and culture, exploring their links with Lithuanian literature and culture
  • Language training as a prerequisite of professional competences

Other activities

The teachers of the Department actively participate in developing study programmes and courses, translate scientific literature and fiction from German, organize seminars and conferences, make presentations at international conferences , regularly upgrade their qualification by attending various courses and seminars in Lithuania and going on study or teaching visits abroad.      

International cooperation and participation in projects

The Department has contacts with foreign language departments and language centers in Lithuania and abroad.

The academic staff of the department work in close cooperation with  Vilnius Goethe institute, Public Service Language Center, DAAD, TestDaF institutu (Hagen), Academija Baltica, with colleagues from Johann Wolfgang Goethe Frankfurt am Main university, Westfälische Wilhelms Miunster university, Södertörns högskola Stokholm, Albert-Ludwigs Freiburg university.
